Mindfulness is a buzzword these days in health and wellness, parenting, education, the workforce, spirituality….But what does it mean?
Mindfulness is keeping our heads and hearts where our bodies are. It is paying attention to the present – moment by moment –without judgment.
Mindfulness invites us to be more present, more attentive, and compassionate in the living of our days. It encourages us to bring our whole self to whatever moment we are in, and live it fully.
We are each born with the natural capacity to be mindful. It’s nothing special really. But in our distracted world, our busy days, our full lives, it is easy to wander off and find yourself going through the motions rather than living your one life.
The research on mindfulness is pretty unequivocal. The more mindful we become, the happier we are. Studies show that regular mindfulness practice reduces stress, anxiety and depression, promotes health and immune function, unlocks creativity, enhances relationships, helps us face difficult emotions and strengthens our compassion.
Mindfulness is not some elusive super skill reserved only for our modern mystics, or enlightened folks. It is a natural state that can be strengthened through meditation and other simple practices.
